What to expect at your first visit
Please bring any information from your surgeon, such as your operative notes, restrictions and rehabilitation protocol. Your physiotherapist will ask about your surgery, your recovery so far and your goals, then assess your pain, swelling, range of motion, strength and how you are moving, walking or using the affected limb.
Your rehabilitation plan follows your surgeon’s protocol and restrictions. Early care often focuses on managing pain and swelling and gently restoring movement, then progresses to strengthening, balance and function as healing allows. Your physiotherapist will teach you a home exercise program and update it as you move through each stage, and can communicate with your surgical team as needed. If you notice fever, increasing redness or drainage at the incision, calf pain and swelling, or chest pain or shortness of breath, contact your surgeon or seek emergency care right away.
Conditions we commonly help with
- Knee replacement
- Hip replacement
- Knee ligament (ACL) reconstruction
- Shoulder surgery, including rotator cuff repair
- Ankle surgery and fracture repair
- Recovery after fractures
- Returning to sport after surgery (see sports physiotherapy)
Insurance and direct billing
We offer direct billing to most extended health insurance plans, so in many cases you will not need to pay up front and wait for reimbursement. Coverage differs from plan to plan, so check your benefits before your visit. You do not need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist in Ontario, although some plans require one for reimbursement. If your injury happened at work or in a car accident, see our WSIB workplace injuries and motor vehicle accident pages. Interim Federal Health Program clients can learn more on our IFHP page.
